Recommendations for Incorporating DEI in Grant-Making Practice

A checklist designed to help donors incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion in their grant-making practice.

As the terms diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have become increasingly prevalent in philanthropy, Arabella decided to develop a document that translates the values of DEI into concrete actions that apply to the grant-making process. This document is a work in progress based on our experience thus far with supporting philanthropic institutions in their DEI work, and it will continue to evolve as we learn more about how to be effective thought partners in this space.

This document is for grant-making organizations that want to incorporate DEI into their day-to-day work, regardless of how far you are in your DEI journey. The document is divided into three sections: Grant-making Strategy, Grant-making Implementation, and Grantee Selection, Evaluation, and Management. Within each section are a plethora of opportunities that relate to each step of the grant-making process, and you can adapt them as necessary to fit the unique needs of your organization.
